Does Tirupati God really need our hair and money?

Om Namo Venkatesaaya!

Everyday thousands of devotees offer hair at the sacred shine of Tirumala. Temple gets crores of rupees on a daily basis as part of Gold and currency offering from devotees. For an outsider, these offerings may not sound logical.

As per Hindu sastras, one’s sins reside or are tied to a person’s hair. Padma Purana has a sloka — ”Siro gathaani paapani yanti mundanatho yathaha”. Which means you would get rid of your sins by tonsuring your head completely. This practice is directed only for men. A woman should not tonsure her head. She can only do that for the sake of her husband’s health and that too if her husband is in a critical condition.

You may earn money genuinely but when others look at your wealth or prosperity, it would still attract a sin. To get rid of this scenario, devotees offer money as well.

So Tirupati Sri Venkateswara Swamy helps one get rid of his sins by offering their hair. Also when a man offers his hair, he is essentially laying down his ego at the lotus feet of God as a man would not want to get his head tonsured for any other reason.

Om Namo Venkatesaaya!
