Note: Below story is from Hindu puraanas (Hindu sacred texts). People inclined scientifically may not relate to this story and so may choose to skip reading below.

Anjana Devi gave birth to a baby in a cave. After giving birth she went out to get some food for the baby.

The newborn baby who was born with immense radiance started walking soon after birth. He felt like eating something and saw Sun which looked like a fruit to him. He started to fly towards Sun.

Sun God was perplexed with a small boy approaching him with great speed. He reduced his heat intensity so as to not burn the baby. It was grahanam (eclipse) time and Rahu graha was approaching towards Sun. Baby Hanuma found Rahu graha more interesting and diverted towards that object. Rahu felt intimidated and went to Indra. Rahu questioned Indra if he gave another person the boon to approach Sun during eclipse time.

Indra wanted to check about the boy and he himself came on his white elephant. Baby Hanuma found Indra’s Airavatham (white elephant) even more interesting and started approaching towards the elephant.

Without further delay, Indra hit Baby Hanuma with Vajrayudham. Anjaneya left Cheek broke and he fell with great speed on to the ground and fainted!

Vayu devatha (Wind God) saw his Son Hanuma falling onto the ground hit by Indra. Angered Vayu stopped his flow everywhere. Suddenly whole world got to a standstill. No living being was able to move as air within wouldn’t flow.

Looking at the state of Universe, Devathas ran to Lord Brahma. Brahma himself along with all Devathas came to the place where Baby Hanuma fell.

Lord Brahma held Baby Hanuma cheeks and sprinkled some sacred water. Anjaneya immediately woke up and started playing around.

Lord Brahma said Vayu(Air) may not have a body but he has to exist in every body to function. Anjaneya who was born to Vayu God will serve as a protector for everyone. Lord Brahma asks other Devathas to bless Baby Hanuma.

  1. Indra then says that his Vajrayudham will not be able to cause any harm to him.
  2. Lord Brahma says his Brahmastra will not be able to hold him in anyway.
  3. Varun (Rain God) devatha says he will never fall sick and also he will never get tired. He will not die even if he falls in water.
  4. Yamadharma Raju says his Yama Dandam will not work on him. So Yama will never be able to take away his life.
  5. Vishwakarma says — I am creator of weapons. None of the arrows or weapons in any war will have the power to arrest Hanuma.
  6. Kubera gives a boon that none of the weapons held by Devathas will work on Hanuma.
  7. Surya (Sun God) says he will give some of his might to Hanuma. He also says he will become Guru for Hanuma.

This way, on the day of his birth itself, within few hours after being born, Hanuma becomes invincible.

Hanuma was left to play around in Rishis ashrams. As a toddler, Hanuma does immense mischief by breaking things in ashrams. Rishis then get together and make Hanuma forget about his might and strength.

Rishis proclaim that in future, someone will sing his praise and he will get to remember all his might.

At the end of Kishkindakanda, Jambavantha praises Hanuma with stotram and that is when Hanuma curse ended. Since then there was no stopping for Hanuma!

It is believed that even today, Hanuma visits any place, in one form or other if there is Rama chant or Ramayan pravachanam going on.
